Probiotic-based vs Chemical-based Cleaners
There are many types of cleaners out there. The most common cleaners are the ones you see on the grocery store and big box store shelves. Until recently, chemical-based cleaners have dominated the shelves. But now there are alternatives to the harsh toxins contained in chemical-based cleaners.
Enter Probiotics
You may know of probiotics as the beneficial bacteria contained in yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, dark chocolate, etc. Well would you believe that probiotics are now used in cleaning solutions.
An article in the PMC, US National Library of medicine National institutes of Health Can probiotic cleaning solutions replace chemical disinfectants in dental clinics? (nih.gov) cited a study that used probiotic cleaning solutions on different surfaces in a selected dental clinic for 3 weeks. “Despite the short duration of this study, we noticed significant reduction in the microbial counts on most of the tested surfaces. Our results are in agreement with recent reports indicating that probiotic-based sanitation had stronger effect on surface pathogens compared to conventional disinfectants”.
So, what is the true story of probiotic cleaners VS chemical cleaners? And why should you choose one over the other for your cleaning tasks? We compare them side-by-side.
Probiotics vs Chemicals
Positive Surfaces Friendly, beneficial bacteria work by naturally degrading soils, foods and organic compounds from many surfaces. This promotes a healthy environment, keeping your surfaces cleaner, longer. |
Negative Surfaces Harmful chemicals strip surfaces of all beneficial microbes, leaving a heavy chemical residue. Prolonged use can damage surfaces and may cause toxic overload in humans and animals. |
Bio-Approach Probiotics add beneficial microbes, creating a positive live surface that continuously works to create a beneficial environment. These powerful bacteria work to degrade organics and fatty oils. |
Non-Bio-Approach Many chemicals strip surfaces of both beneficial bacteria and harmful organics. This leaves surface barren of good bacteria, creating an environment where viruses and bacteria may thrive, despite continual toxic sterilization. |
Beneficial Environment Probiotics reduce the negative effects of heavy chemicals in homes, businesses, schools and other commercial systems. These friendly bacteria keep working to remove biofilm and reduce toxins. Probiotic based cleaners have a much smaller environmental impact |
Harmful environment Heavy chemicals increase toxic load in our homes, schools and businesses. Ongoing and improper use of chemicals is linked to “sick buildings, “allergic reactions and other illnesses. Many chemical-based cleaners are made from non-sustainable materials that also release chemicals into the air when they are manufactured |
Why use Probiotic-Based Cleaners over Chemical Based Cleaners?
It is evidential that chemical-based cleaners, while they aim to kill bacteria, they also kill good bacteria. Probiotic-based cleaners use beneficial bacteria to compete with and overtake harmful bacteria. The good bacteria penetrate deep into the pores of materials and surfaces, continuing to work long after it is applied. Whereas chemical-based cleaners work immediately but have no mechanism to provide long term effectiveness.
The main reason not to use chemical-based cleaners is because they can be harmful to people, pets and the environment, especially if used incorrectly.
Even though chemical-based cleaners may work well and smell good, if used or disposed of incorrectly, they could be hazardous to yourself, your pets and the environment. Many of them are given various degrees of the following classifications on a 1-5 scale: Flammable; A skin irritant; An eye Irritant; and Hazardous to aquatic life. The cleveland Clinic cited that "there are numerous "all-purpose" cleaning products on the market. These products usually contain detergents, grease-cutting agents, solvents and/or disinfectants. The specific chemicals in these ingredients include ammonia, ethylene glycol monobutyl acetate, sodium hypochlorite and/or trisodium phosphate. Depending on the ingredients used, all-purpose cleaners can irritate the skin, eyes, nose and throat. They can be highly poisonous to both humans and animals if swallowed".
As Sonny Hobbs, owner and founder of Culleoka Company said in his blog
Harmful Toxins in Everyday Cleaning Supplies and Household Products, “Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer.
