We encounter chemicals every day—in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the products we use, the materials in our homes and workplaces, and even naturally occurring substances in the environment.

The word “toxic” can sound alarming, but understanding toxic substances requires more than simply labeling a chemical as good or bad. Whether a substance presents a health risk depends on several factors, including what the substance is, how much exposure occurs, how exposure happens, and how long it lasts.

Understanding these basics can help us make more informed choices and reduce unnecessary chemical exposure in the places where we live, work, learn and gather.

What Is a Toxic Substance?

A toxic substance is a substance capable of causing harmful effects under certain conditions of exposure.

Some substances are highly toxic at relatively small amounts, while others may present concerns primarily at much higher levels or after repeated exposure.

This is why one of the fundamental principles of toxicology is:

Even familiar substances can become harmful at sufficiently high doses, while the presence of a potentially hazardous substance does not necessarily mean that normal exposure will cause harm.

Understanding this distinction helps put chemical safety into perspective.

Toxicity, Hazard and Risk: What's the Difference?

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they don't mean exactly the same thing.

Toxicity describes a substance's ability to produce harmful effects.

Hazard describes the potential source of harm. A chemical might be hazardous because it is toxic, corrosive, flammable, reactive or has another potentially harmful property.

Risk considers both the hazard and the likelihood and extent of exposure.

In other words, understanding whether something presents a meaningful risk requires more than knowing that a substance has hazardous properties. We also need to consider how much exposure actually occurs.

Examples of Toxic or Potentially Harmful Substances

Potentially harmful substances can come from many different sources.

Examples may include:

  • Lead
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Certain solvents
  • Some pesticides
  • Certain industrial chemicals
  • Asbestos
  • Radon
  • Some cleaning-product ingredients
  • Vehicle exhaust and other combustion byproducts

Some of these substances occur naturally, while others are manufactured.

The important point is that “chemical” does not automatically mean “toxic.” Everything around us—including water and oxygen—is made of chemicals.

Instead, it is more useful to understand the characteristics of individual substances and the circumstances under which exposure occurs.

How Does Chemical Exposure Happen?

For a substance to potentially affect the body, exposure generally needs to occur.

There are three common routes:

Inhalation

Gases, vapors, dust, aerosols and mists can be breathed into the respiratory system.

This is one reason adequate ventilation can be important when using certain products indoors.

Ingestion

A substance may enter the body through contaminated food, water, hands or accidental swallowing.

Proper storage and keeping household products away from food and out of children's reach can help reduce accidental exposure.

Skin or Eye Contact

Some substances can irritate or damage the skin or eyes, while certain chemicals can also be absorbed through the skin.

Following label directions and using appropriate protective equipment when recommended are important parts of product safety.

Why Does Dose Matter?

The amount of a substance a person encounters is an important part of evaluating potential risk.

A small exposure and a large exposure to the same substance may have very different effects.

That's why toxicologists consider factors such as:

  • The amount or concentration
  • How often exposure occurs
  • How long the exposure lasts
  • The route of exposure
  • The characteristics of the substance
  • Individual susceptibility

Acute vs. Chronic Exposure

Exposure can also be described by how long it occurs.

Acute exposure generally refers to exposure occurring over a relatively short period.

Chronic exposure refers to repeated or continuous exposure over a longer period of time.

The potential effects of either type of exposure depend heavily on the particular substance, dose and circumstances.

This is one reason reducing unnecessary repeated exposure can be a practical goal in homes and workplaces.

Are Some People More Sensitive Than Others?

Yes.

People don't necessarily respond to substances in exactly the same way. Age, genetics, allergies, health status and other individual factors can influence how someone responds to a particular exposure.

Children can also have different exposure patterns than adults because of their size, development and behavior.

Practical Ways to Reduce Unnecessary Chemical Exposure

Creating a healthier indoor environment doesn't require being afraid of every chemical.

It means making informed choices.

Some practical steps include:

Read product labels.
Follow the manufacturer's directions, precautions and recommended use.

Use appropriate ventilation.
When a product calls for ventilation, bring fresh air into the space by opening windows or using appropriate ventilation systems.

Don't mix products unless specifically directed.
Combining certain household chemicals can create dangerous reactions or fumes.

Store products properly.
Keep household and maintenance products in their original containers and away from children and pets.

Use appropriate protective equipment.
Gloves, eye protection or other equipment may be recommended for certain products or applications.

Use the right amount.
More product doesn't necessarily mean better results.

Consider the products you use frequently.
For products used every day, it can be worthwhile to understand their ingredients, intended purpose and proper use.

Choose products appropriate for the job.
Different situations require different solutions. Routine cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting are not interchangeable processes.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting Are Different

This distinction is especially important when choosing cleaning products.

Cleaning removes dirt, organic matter and contaminants from surfaces.

Sanitizing reduces certain microorganisms to levels defined by applicable standards when an appropriately registered or approved product is used according to its directions.

Disinfecting uses products specifically designed and registered for controlling particular microorganisms according to label directions.

A routine cleaner should not be assumed to sanitize or disinfect unless it has been specifically tested, registered or labeled for that purpose.

Understanding what you actually need a product to accomplish can help you choose the appropriate solution without using more aggressive chemistry when it isn't necessary.
