What Are PFAS?
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a large group of synthetic chemicals used to make products resistant to water, stains, grease, and heat. They’ve been around since the 1940s—commonly found in everything from nonstick cookware to waterproof clothing to some cleaning products.
Why the concern? PFAS are often called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment—and they can accumulate in our bodies over time.
The Health Risks
Research has linked long-term PFAS exposure to:
- Disruption of hormone function
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Lower immune response (especially in children)
- Increased risk of certain cancers
- Developmental delays and learning issues
The worst part? They’re invisible. You can’t see them, smell them, or taste them—but they’re likely in your home right now.
Tips for Avoiding PFAS in Everyday Life
Knowledge is power. Here are 5 ways to reduce your exposure to PFAS starting today:
-
Ditch Nonstick Cookware
Choose stainless steel, ceramic, or cast iron instead. -
Skip Stain-Resistant Treatments
Be cautious with fabrics or carpets labeled “stain-resistant” or “water-repellent.” -
Filter Your Drinking Water
Look for filters certified to remove PFAS, such as activated carbon or reverse osmosis systems. -
Avoid Products with Fluoro- or Perfluoro-
Read ingredient labels—if you see “fluoro,” “perfluoro,” or “PTFE,” put it back. -
Use PFAS-Free Cleaners
Many mainstream cleaners contain hidden PFAS. Choose brands (like ours!) that clearly state PFAS-free and non-toxic.
